Questions About Collections
Some of my past debt has been turned over to a collection agency. The agency has added interest and fees to the original amount, am I obligated to pay these? The original balance is all that shows up on my credit report and I have since paid that.
This all depends on your original contract with the creditor. If the invoice or contract that you agreed to pay states that fees for a collection agency and/or attorney, then yes, the collection agency has the right to add in fees.
I would request a copy of the bill and contract from the collection agency, as legally when requested, they must provide this to you. In the letter, request the portion that states these fees may be added, and also that you have signed something agreeing to this.
If they cannot produce this item, I would dispute the fees based on the fact that no advance notice was given.
