The magnetic stripe DOES NOT contain personal information–this is an urban myth.

However, hotel key cards are used to TRANSFER credit card information obtained by other means, enabling the key card to be used in transactions where a credit card is swiped.

There is one thing related to the topic that I feel responsible to share with my readers. When you stay at a hotel or motel that gives you a card to be used as a key, do NOT turn it in when you check out of the hotel. Instead, take it home with you and cut it up into tiny pieces as you would with an unused credit card. The little magnetic strip on these cards contains all sorts of information about you such as credit card number, name, address, phone number and so on. Someone could easily get that information if your hotel key card ends up in their hot little hands.
