Zynga established itself with the massively popular FarmVille game on Facebook, and eventually other games for the social network such as CityVille and Mafia Wars.
Each of these proved a nuisance for many Facebook users because of their emphasis on interaction with friends. Zynga announced a plan to create its own service largely separate from Facebook, though still requiring it to sign in, that is currently known as “Project Z.”
The project is presented as a dedicated gaming platform, but some have conjectured the move is designed to allow Zynga to share less of its revenue with Facebook.
However, Zynga’s latest IPO filing noted, “We generate substantially all of our revenue and players through the Facebook platform and expect to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.”
With the latest release, the company also announced that it will be listed as ZNGA on Nasdaq, according to Reuters. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq had been in a race to earn the IPO that could take in as much as $1 billion.
